Burlington, Vermont artist R.D. Fishell is a true off-the-grid enigma. No gallery representation, no website, no social media—possibly not even a phone. My son, Rhett, first encountered him on Church Street in downtown Burlington, close to the University of Vermont campus. He spied a middle-aged gentleman wearing clothes painted with graphics, selling his art out of a shopping cart. Rhett struck up a conversation became intrigued by his story and drawn to his work, and couldn’t resist bringing a few of R.D.'s pieces home to his campus apartment.
R.D.'s art is raw and alive, a fusion of bold, vibrant colors, graffiti influences, layered imagery, and scribbled text. Every glance reveals something new, an emotion, a story, or a hidden detail waiting to be discovered. It’s art that feels personal, unapologetic, and deeply connected to the world it comes from.
